Gangster Film Reader
Alain Silver and James Ursini Amadeus Press, LLC Limelight Editions

The analysis developed by Silver and Ursini finds the origin of mobster representations in the 20th century crime film genre in the audiences relationship with the gangster as a tragic urban hero, and in turn, the changing racial status of different immigrant groups. The book is brilliant, and highlights the tensions and contradictions of the American dream from the perspective of of your average gangster film. Who better to demonstrate the complex nature of the American dream then the figure of the mobster - a man who can achieve financial success, even if it is precarious, only through incredible spectacular violence. Queens of Noise: The Real Story of the Runaways
Evelyn McDonnellDe Capo Press / Perseus Books Group

In four years the teenage members of the Runaways did what no other group of female rock musicians before them could: they released four albums for a major label and toured the world. The Runaways busted down doors for every girl band that followed. Joan Jett, Sandy West, Cherrie Currie, lead guitarist Lita Ford, and bassists Jackie Fox and Vicky Blue were pre-punk bandits, fostering revolution girl style decades before that became a riot grrrl catchphrase.

The story of the Runaways has never been told in its entirety. Drawing on interviews with most of this seminal rock band’s former members as well as controversial manager Kim Fowley, Queens of Noise will look beyond the lurid voyeuristic appeal of a sex-drugs-rock ’n’ roll saga to give the band its place in musical, feminist, and cultural history. A vivid must-read part of music's evolution.

The Bee Gees
David N Meyer De Capo Press / Perseus Books Group

The first narrative biography of the Bee Gees, the phenomenally popular vocal group that has sold more than 200 million records worldwide—sales in the company of the Beatles and Michael Jackson. The Bee Gees is the epic family saga of brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, and it’s riddled with astonishing highs—especially as they became the definitive band of the disco era, fueled by Saturday Night Fever and crashing lows, including the tragic drug-fueled downfall of youngest brother, Andy. In recent years, a whole new generation of fans has rediscovered the undeniable grooves and harmonies that made the Bee Gees and songs like Stayin’ Alive, How Deep is Your Love, To Love Somebody, and I Started a Joke timeless. We all remember where we were when we first heard the Bee Gees - if you've got some sense, this review is where you'll decide to buy the Bee Gee's biography.

Lou Reed: Pass Through Fire - The Collected Lyrics
Lou ReedDe Capo Press / Perseus Books Group

Containing a body of work that spans more than three decades, Pass Thru Fire is a stunning collection of the lyrics of an American original. Through his many incarnations-from proto punk to glam rocker to elder statesman of the avant garde-Lou Reed’s work has maintained an undeniable vividness and raw beauty, fueled by precise character studies and rendered with an admirable shot of moral ambiguity. Beginning with his formative days in the Velvet Underground and continuing through his remarkable solo career-albums like Transformer, Berlin, New York, Magic and Loss, and Ecstasy-Pass Thru Fire is crucial to an appreciation of Lou Reed, not only as a consummate underground musician, but as one of the truly significant poets of our time. Music is powerful but Lou shows us that a lyrical artist doesn't need his lyre to inspire. His poetry jumps off the page, just as it jumps out of the music, into a life of his own. Rest in power, Lou.

Concerto For Group & Orchestra

Jon Lord, the long-time Deep Purple keyboardist, always wanted a studio recording of his famed Concerto For Group and Orchestra. Only recently did he publicly make this wish a reality. In what turned out to be his swan song, he recorded Concerto For Group and Orchestra .

Lord assembled guest musicians such as Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, Joe Bonamassa and Steve Morse in the Abbey Road Studios, to work with his trusted partner, director Paul Mann, on the 2012 version of the legendary concert.

"Over these last years since leaving Deep Purple, I've played it over 30 times with different orchestras and conductors all over the world, and, of course, in 2000 I did it well over 30 times with Purple on the Concerto tour, so I've been honing the piece live on stage, and I ve had the opportunity to change things in the score that weren t sounding quite right. It is therefore a marvelous and exciting prospect to have the definitive recording of the definitive version of the score. "(Jon Lord May 2011)

On July 16, 2012, Jon Lord passed away in London at 71 years old. This album is a joyful testament of a great musician and fantastic man.

His dignity and graciousness touched us all. His music was an inspiration and took us to places beyond our imagination... A truly great man. We humbly express our eternal love and great respect.

A must see tribute, tear-jerker, and jam-out.

For Workers Power: The Selected Writings of Maurice Brinton
Maurice Brinton AK Press

since david goodway edited maurice brinton's best writings in 2004, the thesis of "workers power" has been discarded by much of the left. jasper bernes argues in a recent analysis for endnotes #3 that the program of workers self-management is a historical relic, and that workers are no longer in a structural position to imagine themselves as a historical subject bound to seize the totality of production. but when attending a recent service workers strike at the university of california, santa cruz, i heard just that: workers, academic and otherwise, urging the crowd to realize self-management as a strategy to grow worker power. i bet brinton would agree with the workers, and their words are a striking plea to read this book. study from the masses, and the brilliant theory they produce: that means picking up this book.
