Chasing 120:
Monte WolvertonPlain Truth Ministries

A highly successful but unscrupulous health mogul promises his followers 120 years of robust life if they stick to his "Bible-based" regimen and buy his products. Through his vast Wellness 120 empire, based in the Portland, Oregon area, the charming and charismatic Dr. Tyler Belknap has amassed a cult-like following of people who are working to achieve 12 decades of life.
In nationwide infomercials and books, the fast-talking Texas adman-turned-preacher targets Christian consumers with Biblical-sounding promises of health and longevity. Many of his followers seem to enjoy improved health. But others suffer serious side effects from foods and supplements laced with exotic substances and GMOs developed in Belknap's secret underground research facility in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. Belknap and his cronies will stop at nothing to keep their edge in the market, bribing politicians and officials, coercing suppliers, sweeping dissatisfied customers under the carpet and crushing whistleblowers.
In the midst of this culture of false promises and religious-sounding fakery, Belknap's creative director Dave Whitman and his wife Marcia have enjoyed a comfortable life. Suddenly they find themselves at the center of a huge crisis when their teenage son suffers severe brain damage from one of Belknap's psychoactive substance-laced foods. They must come to grips with the fact that the captivating and persuasive leader they have admired for decades is a crook-and that justice does not always happen in this world. Yet in spite of all that, they learn that life goes on and thrives-even though houses of cards in which we sometimes misplace our faith may fall around us.

Apathy for the Devil:
Nick KentDa Capo Press

Chronicling Nick Kent’s up-close , personal, often harrowing adventures with the Rolling Stones, Lester Bangs, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, the Sex Pistols, and Chrissie Hynde, among scores of others, Apathy for the Devil is a picaresque memoir that bears witness to the beautiful and the damned of this turbulent decade.
As a college dropout barely out of his teens, Kent’s first five interviews were with the MC5, Captain Beefheart, the Grateful Dead, the Stooges, and Lou Reed. But after the excitement and freedom of those early years, his story would come to mirror that of the decade itself, as he slipped into excess and ever-worsening heroin use. Apathy for the Devil is a compelling story of inspiration, success, burn out, and rebirth from a classic wordsmith.

The Black Book
Anthony MannEdward LaskerFilm Chest

Also known as Reign of Terror, The Black Book is a bold effort by director Anthony Mann to film a French Revolution epic on a "B" detective picture budget. Robert Cummings stars as Charles D'Aubigny, who has been engaged by a group of political moderates to retrieve a little black book from Revolutionary leader Robespierre. The book allegedly contains evidence that Robespierre has been acting in his own interest rather than on behalf of the new government. D'Aubigny is compelled to deal with the tangible threat of Robespierre's chief henchman as well as his uncertainty concerning the loyalties of those working with him. The Black Book is retrieved, but not before Robespierre has self-destructed on his own. The cheapness of The Black Book works in its favor, especially its overuse of shadows; while this photographic device was intended to disguise the seediness of the sets, it accurately conveys a "dark" period in French history that here is literally as well as figuratively dark.

Heroes and Villains: Essays on Music, Movies, Comics, and Culture
David Hajdu Da Capo Press

The heart of Heroes and Villains is an extraordinary new piece of cultural rediscovery, original to this book. It tells the untold story of one of the most important—and, ultimately, one of the most tragic—figures in American popular music, Billy Eckstine. Through exhaustive new research, Hajdu shows how this great, forgotten singer, once more popular than Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, transformed American music by combining sex appeal, sophistication, and black machismo—in the era of segregation. The cost, for Eckstine, was his career—and nearly his life.

Who Killed Mister Moonlight?: Bauhaus black magick and benediction
David J. HaskinsJawbone Press

Beginning with the creation of Bauhaus's seminal debut hit 'Bela Lugosi's Dead', David J. Haskins offers a no-holds-barred account of his band's rapid rise to fame and glory in the late 70s, their sudden dissolution in the 80s, and their subsequent--and often strained--reunions. In between, he explores his work as a solo performer, and with acclaimed trio Love And Rockets--culminating in the devastating fire that ripped through the sessions for their 1996 album Sweet F.A. He also delves deep into his exploration of the occult, drawing together a diverse cast of supporting characters, including William S. Burroughs, Alan Moore, Genesis P. Orridge, and Rick Rubin. Bristling with power and passion, music and magic, Who Killed Mister Moonlight? is a rock 'n' roll memoir like no other.

The Fender Archives: A Scrapbook of Artifacts, Treasures, and Inside Information
Tom Wheeler

Welcome to The Fender Archives part history, part archive, part scrapbook, and part treasure chest. You are invited along on a research expedition, a sort of archeological dig through several sites: file folders in Fender's offices; the family archives of Don Randall; author/curator Richard Smith's collections; the photo galleries of John Peden and Fretted Americana; jammed metal cabinets in a sweltering warehouse near the Corona factory; and the home of the late Bob Perine in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, just blocks from the beach where he and Ned Jacoby took now-iconic photos of high school kids, surfboards, palm trees, and chrome-clad rocket-ship guitars in Shoreline Gold and Daphne Blue and Candy Apple Red. The Fender Archives looks at the company from the inside. Handwritten letters, production totals, personal logbooks, in-house memos, Leo Fender's drawing-board sketches, financial reports-such documents are freed here from long confinement in cardboard boxes and filing cabinets, dusted off, and promoted from background to spotlight. The Fender Archives sheds new light on the inspirations for revolutionary instruments and amplifiers, their sometimes difficult births and growing pains, the environment into which they were unleashed upon the world, and the motivations and personalities of key players.

My Journey, My Destiny
Arlene Krieger Mascot Books

Jerome Anthony Gourdine, known as Little Anthony, began singing songs in his crib. His mind buzzed of melodies which, when he could later talk, he put to words. A true prodigy, his voice has become one of the most recognizable on earth. Anthony s parents, also performing artists, passed on their talent and passion to Anthony. But it was more than genetic inheritance that spurred the prodigy to greatness; it was his innate talent and his spiritual belief that he was destined to become this special performer. Anthony never learned how to play an instrument nor read music, yet his acutely tuned ear tells him when there is a sour note played by a violist in a full philharmonic orchestra. The streets of Brooklyn became his first stage as he gathered under the street lamps to harmonize with friends, who later on became known as The Imperials. A teenage heart throb, he set the radio on fire with his smooth, savvy voice that could sing three octaves and a falsetto. From the Friday afternoon sock hops, to touring Europe, Anthony s music has endured five decades. After fifty years of producing hit songs, Reviver Records is releasing a series of albums for a new generation of listeners. Duets will incorporate Anthony's angelic voice with well-known singers of other genres, ages, and backgrounds. A one-man show will highlight Anthony's classic hits along with fresh new tunes as he tours around the country. Cousin Brucie, now broadcasting around the globe with Sirius XM Radio, provides an intimate look inside Little Anthony's life through the town hall style show. Surviving, flourishing, and injecting fresh new sounds into a legendary voice that has been on the radio and stage for over five decades, is a feat only a handful of performers can do. Famed singers have bowed at Anthony's feet, radio DJs have thanked him for allowing the airwaves to be filled with his precious music, and world-acclaimed producer, David Gest, brought Anthony's musc to England. Anthony's music is played around the world, and the best is yet to come.
